zur Nieden lab showcases latest research at 2017 Inland Empire Stem Cell Consortium

November 20, 2017

 

Held this year at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), the Annual Inland Empire Stem Cell Consortium featured posters and talks from researchers at CSUSB, Western University of Health Sciences, and the University of California, Riverside.

 

Lauren kicked off the morning talks with an engaging presentation on how our lab uses stem cells to investigate the birth defect etiology, while Anne, Joey, Steven, and Nicole all presented their most recent work on the tobacco teratology and miR projects during the afternoon poster sessions.

In recognition of his fantastic presentation skills, Steven took home 1st place in the student poster competition!

Congrats, Steven, and great job, team!

 

 

Steven Sera presents his work at CMDB's Graduate Student Symposium

September 13, 2017

 

Steven gave an update on this latest work on the role of miR361 in osteogenesis at the Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology Graduate Student Symposium today.

The Symposium is organized by the Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology graduate students here at UC Riverside.

Jolie Carreon and Hannah Naverrete represent zur Nieden lab at RISE and MARC U-Star Summer Symposia

August 31, 2017

 

Jolie and Hannah presented their most recent contributions to zur Nieden lab's tobacco research at the RISE and MARC U-Star Undergraduate Research Symposia this week.

RISE and MARC U-Star are summer research  and 2 year, respectively, programs that prepare undergraduate students from underrepresented groups for graduate school. The programs sponsor student participation in UCR research laboratories and also provide seminars and workshops on presentation skills and graduate school to supplement student training.

 

Both programs culminate with a 2-day research symposium at the end of the summer.

The zur Nieden lab is glad to welcome our new undergraduate research assistants: Michael Hanna, Jolie Carreon, Adelina Sefiani, and Hannah Navarrete, new graduate students: Desiree Willliams and Omran Karmach, and visiting scholar: Feyzan Ozdal Kurt.

Nicole Sparks and Lauren Walker Present at 57th Annual Teratology Society Meeting in Denver, CO

June 30, 2017

 

This past week Nicole and Lauren presented their most recent work at the Teratology Society Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.  

 

Nicole's and Lauren's abstracts had the distinction of being selected for an oral platform presentation held on Sunday of the meeting. Both also received Travel Awards from the Teratology Society to attend this year's meeting.

 

The Teratology Society is an interdisciplinary coalition of researchers exploring the causes of birth defects and developmentally-relevant disorders with the end goal of prevention and mitigation.

Nicole Sparks and Lauren Walker recognized at Annual Environmental Toxicology Student Symposium

The zur Nieden lab is proud to announce that​ Nicole and Lauren were both recognized for excellence in research at this year's Environmental Toxicology (ETOX) Annual Student Symposium.

Both Nicole and Lauren were awarded Honorable Mention for the Fukuto Best Student Presentation Award.

 

Each year, the ETOX Annual Student Symposium showcases the work of all of the students in the Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program at UCR.

zur Nieden lab welcomes Anne Brosemann!

March 20, 2017

 

The zur Nieden lab is happy to welcome our new Postdoctoral Scholar, Anne Brosemann, to the group!

 

Dr. Brosemann heralds from the University of Rostock, Germany and is joining our microRNA research team to help uncover the role of particular microRNAs in bone formation.

Lauren Walker represents zur Nieden lab at Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting

March 17, 2017

 

Lauren presented her most recent work at this past week's Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting, held this year in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

She received Honorable Mention for her poster presentation during the Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology Specialty Section trainee poster competition. Lauren also continued her duties as the Women in Toxicology Special Interest Group Student Representative and served as a Undergraduate Mentor during the meeting.

Nicole and Dr. zur Nieden present at Keystone Symposium in Olympic Valley, CA

January 13, 2017

 

Nicole and Dr. zur Nieden braved a blizzards and blackouts to present our latest tobacco and microRNA research this week at the Transcriptional and Epigenetic Control in Stem Cells Keystone Symposium in Olympic Valley, CA.

Lauren Walker Leads Mentorship Workshop at NOBCChE National Meeting

November 11, 2016

 

Earlier this week, Lauren lead a mentorship workshop for undergraduate and graduate students at the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) National Conference.

 

The workshop aimed to provide students with the tools required to proactively and productively manage relationships with their mentors and mentees.

Lauren also presented her research during an oral platform session and received a Travel Award to attend the meeting.
